Site and Actors

The creation seeks to bring together diverse agents to form a complex harmonious network. The main actors include participation and activation of different agents (persons that are aware and unaware), controlled sequence (procession) leading up to the "climax," and symmetry and alignment (visually and acoustically) in disorder and complication. Elements involved in the creation consists of sound produced by air (as in the pipe organ) and light (using openings and material to investigate light and shadow). Together these multiple elements work together in a coordinated system to perform religious rituals and ceremonies for believers and provide an experiential and interactive space for others.

Hong Kong Site

From the research of the Royal Opera House and Protestantism, I was very interested in the idea of multiple agents coming together to a sense of ecstasy: a "climax." 

This climax would be achieved by participation and activation by different actors: people, light, wind, and sound. A choreographed sequence with precise timing and control would be established to create a "performance" leading up to the "climax."

In the context of Hong Kong where a prominent axis or prescribed view barely exists, the architecture seeks to provide symmetry and alignment in a seemingly chaotic and complicated site. When actors are unaware of their participation in the choreography, effects produced would be meaningless. Yet, when actors actively perform and conduct their religious rituals and ceremonies, this symmetry and alignment would be gradually revealed until one achieves the climatic moment.

The effects I seek to achieve is an "immersed" environment, similar to that of a Gothic Church, yet surpasses it as the architecture is no longer static but plays a major role in the performance and responses to the agents acting upon it.

I was enticed by intersections of the streets, each with its own distinct characteristics, as well as the elevated walkway above. The complex and exciting site conditions reminded the concept that I wanted to achieve: the idea of symbiosis, coming together of diverse agents.
